Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who

Why do we love these shows too much, because they are different in so many good ways from what we are used to.
The industry of entertainment in Israel is tiny and most of what you can find on TV is news, reality or foreign series and movies. Israelis are good English speakers (on average) and the subtitles we get are just decent enough for a relatively cheap way to get a lot of foreign entertainment on our TV sets.
Original Israeli television has little to none to offer in the field of quality series. At the very best we can expect a decent show once in a few years and maybe a random Telenovela once in a while. Game shows and reality TV are flourishing in Israel but it is hardly comparable to good TV series.

BBC's body of work is on a whole different level. Their budgets are much bigger and with a significant pool of actors coming out of world renowned acting schools they have a lot more resources and opportunities to produce TV shows of high quality. Even a niche mini-series like Casanova became world famous, thanks to the writer and co-stars.

So we can settle on Israeli and British TV being incomparable, but most Israeli's watch subtitled American TV. And the US entertainment industry truly has it all. A significantly bigger and a very variable pool of actors, even bigger budgets, a huge crowed which dictates trends and provides good feedback. Yet the modern "Doctor Who" has been standing out as one of the best shows ever for the last ten years, with Sherlock joining in for the last five.

Writing and music play a much bigger role than most people realize. I think many people would agree that both series ooze creative genius. Davies and Moffat are spectacular. I honestly think they write better than any other single writer or a writing team anywhere. Accompanied by amazing music they portray stories you wouldn't believe, both from a fantasy point of view, as well as good old-fashioned mystery.

Actors play a major role as well. I do not know why they are so good. Maybe coming from a smaller pond they enjoy having more experience working with the same people for many years. And people like Tennant, Piper, Eccelton, Tate, Smith, Gillan and Darvill for Doctor Who and Cumberbatch, Freeman, Brealey, Stubbes, and Abbington for Sherlock simply bring their "A game" to every episode shoot. They are simply better. No other explanation for it. That's why we love watching them so much.
